The plot, in essence, focuses on the Gzilt, a humanoid species of reptilian origin who were deeply involved in the set up of the Culture, but for reasons that come out in this book, never joined the multi-species humanoid/Mind anarchic commune that serves as the axis of many of Banks’ best novels. What is more, while most of Banks’ previous Culture novels can be read in any order, I suspect this book will only appeal to those who are already fans of the Culture series. Oh, don’t get me wrong, it was a good read that gives you something more to think about than the story alone, but despite the fact it was better than most other books out there, it didn’t rise to the dizzy heights of some of his earlier works. The Culture Universe, a post-need world of super ultratech where pan-galactic travel exists, AI have evolved to such a degree that they are far more intelligent and evolved that humans, and multiple humanoid and non humanoid species coexists. ![]() I suspect, however, that it won’t appeal to people who are not at least somewhat familiar with the Culture and will likely have no appeal to individuals who don’t like Science Fiction. So much stuff kept happening! I was amazed at the plot-line and magnitude of this story. The writing was once again a bit slow but all the details and characters who appeared insignificant at first-all added to the bigger picture and provided conclusions for the plots from the first book. ![]() The horror of the depravities one human could subject to another was atrocious. ![]() My God, some of the scenes were devastating and guttered me. And some, in their denial and weakness, enabled the worst of the worst to strive. There was a faction who showed the worst of humanity-greedy and self-serving, using and torturing others to get what they wanted. Some rose to the occasion, showed a bravery and strength of character as they fought back and did their best to save others. The author took us through the apocalypse and humanity’s reaction to it. With the way Justin Cronin wrote the story, I didn’t have any trouble following it. The story shifts between two different time periods-the past when the virals first escaped and the future, after the world died. I was in the grip of The Passage Trilogy and I was obsessed with knowing what happened next in the story, especially with that title which indicated that this second book in the trilogy was focused on the twelve original virals.
